I found another of Grandma's recipes. Grandpa went to Aunt Wilma's to buy a car from her. He spent the night and she had 3 bean salad. He liked it so much he asked for the recipe and took it home to Grandma. Folowing is the recipe.

Three bean salad

1 can yellow wax beans
1 can green beans
1 can kidney beans
1/2 cup vinegar
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup salad oil

Drain all the beans. Add remaining ingredients, mix well. Chopped onions, celery, green peppers or grated carrots may be added as desired. Cover and chill overnight before serving.

Hope you enjoy.

Here is the jam cake recipe that I promised. Also a picture of Grandma and Grandpa taken Christmas 1976. Hope you enjoy.

Jam Cake

2 cups sugar
½ cup dark brown sugar
½ cup butter
8 eggs (separate)
4 cups flour
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon salt
raisins
1 cup nuts
1 quart jam (Blackberry)
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda.

Cream butter until fluffy. Add sugars and cream together until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks. Sift and measure flour, add to cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt; sift together 4 times. Save a little of the flour mixture to dredge the nuts and raisins.
Add to the creamed butter/sugar mixture. Beat egg whites to soft peak stage and fold in. Add raisins, nuts, jam, and buttermilk in which the soda has been dissolved. Prepare four 9 inch layer pans by lining the bottoms with waxed paper, lightly greased. Divide the batter evenly. Bake at 350 for about 30 minutes. Test with straw for doneness. Cool, remove from pan and remove waxed paper. Frost with caramel icing.

The recipe does not specify a kind of jam. Grandma always used blackberry and I have too. I put about the same amount of raisins as nuts. I don’t have her recipe for the icing. I have never been able to make it like she did.

Blackberry Time

Blackberries are ripe and picking them always reminds me of Grandma. Every summer I would ask her if she would make a cobbler if I picked berries. And then there was Blackberry Hill on the old farm. Did anyone else call it that?

More often than not I would pick berries in shorts and come back all scratched up and she would fuss. I still do the same thing, but this time it was Ashley who told me I should wear long pants.

I still use Grandma's recipe to make cobbler and here it is in case you don't have it.

Melt one stick of butter in a baking dish. (I cut this back to 1/2 stick and it's still good)

Mix 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of self rising flour add one cup of milk to this mix. Pour over the melted butter. Add one quart of fruit and use spoon to make an 'x' through the mixture without stirring.

Bake at 350 for about 45 minutes or until brown on top.

Enjoy.

Poor Folks Hay Wagon

I found someone to cut hay on shares, so I didn't have to buy equipment to bale hay for the horses, cows and goats, but since I still don't have a truck, trailer or wagon there was this small problem of putting the hay in the barn.

Problem solved with a sheet of plywood, a piece of 1/2" nylon rope and my car.

What would Grandpa think? Have a great day!

Babies, etc.

I hear there are lots of new babies in the family. How about some pictures? Weddings? Showers? Ball games?

Kids grow up so fast. It doesn't seem like any time that Melissa was playing in the mud and look at her now.

Also, if you know anyone who should be a part of this send me their email and I'll send them an invite. I'm lost. I don't know what anyone is doing or where they are. Help!
